Santa Croce is great example of an authentic Renaissance square designed with perfect and impressive geometry. Man is not dominated by the Church here: Man is the centre of the world. The Santa Croce Basilica is one of the largest churches officiated by the Franciscan brothers, as well as one of the most important models of Gothic architecture in Italy. In its interior there are the tombs of the greatest Florentine artists, such as Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolò Machiavelli and Leon Battista Alberti.
Thanks to the beauty of its buildings, its wonderful monuments, and its important streets, Piazza Santa Croce is a reference point for the entire area. The neighbouring streets Via de’ Benci, Via Verdi and Via dè Neri, full of characteristic haunts, are a meeting point for Florentines and visitors. This district never sleeps and it’s therefore the ideal location to live the magic atmosphere of the city. 
In June the centre of the square is filled with sand and platforms are built, so that the Calcio Storico Fiorentino (the historical Florentine soccer match) can take place. This sports event dates back to the 15th century and it’s very similar to Rugby. Four teams defy each other: the Rossi (reds) from Santa Maria Novella, the Bianchi (whites) from Santo Spirito, the Verdi (greens) from San Giovanni and the Azzurri (blues) from Santa Croce.
